Something significant is happening in Danville and Pittsylvania County. What was once a region many travelers simply passed through is increasingly becoming a destination—and the numbers are beginning to tell an impressive story. Danville and Pittsylvania County have been named Virginia’s fastest-growing area for visitor spending, reflecting a remarkable transformation underway across the region.

Caesars Virginia Is Bringing Millions of Visitors to Danville
One of the most visible catalysts has been Caesars Virginia.
The latest tourism reporting period included the first full year of operation for the permanent Caesars Virginia resort, replacing the temporary casino facility that introduced the market to Danville in 2023.
During its first full year, approximately 2 million people walked through the doors of the Roman-inspired resort.
Some came for its approximately 1,500 slot machines and gaming options. Others came for dining, accommodations and entertainment.
The resort's 2,500-seat entertainment venue, the Pantheon, has quickly added another reason to visit Danville. Although the venue did not open until June 2025, it hosted 21 shows during its first seven months, with at least 50 performances planned for 2026.
That means Danville isn't simply attracting casino visitors.
It is increasingly attracting overnight guests, concertgoers, couples, groups, business travelers and people experiencing the region for the first time.
And those visitors don't spend their money in just one place.
They stay in hotels. They eat in restaurants. They shop. They purchase fuel. They attend events. They visit attractions. And, importantly, they discover a community they may previously have known very little about.
Nearly 4,000 Jobs Supported by Regional Tourism
The impact is showing up in employment and tax revenue as well. Regional tourism supported approximately 3,941 jobs and generated $18.7 million in local tax revenue, while employment within the tourism sector increased approximately 20%. Those numbers demonstrate why tourism can no longer be viewed simply as an amenity or an occasional economic boost. It is becoming an increasingly important component of the regional economy.
And recreational spending showed particularly dramatic growth—rising 86.9% over 2024. That category includes some of Southern Virginia's most recognizable attractions, including Caesars Virginia, Virginia International Raceway, the Danville Science Center, the Danville Museum of Fine Arts and History and the Olde Dominion Agricultural Complex. Major events are contributing as well. The inaugural Three Sisters Marathon in 2025 brought additional visitors into the region, creating business for hotels, restaurants, retailers and other local establishments. Each successful attraction or event contributes another piece to a much larger economic ecosystem.
From a Place People Pass Through to a Place People Seek Out
Perhaps one of the most important changes occurring in Danville and Pittsylvania County isn't physical. It is perceptual.
As Caesars Virginia began taking shape, leaders in Danville and Pittsylvania County recognized that the region needed to change the way it presented itself to the outside world. Visit SoSi launched in May 2023, just before the temporary casino opened. The name—combining "Southside" with the idea of "so much to do, so much to see"—was created to introduce the region to travelers who might not otherwise have considered Southern Virginia a destination.
What initially generated some local skepticism has increasingly become part of the area's identity. And the strategy appears particularly well timed. People who come for a concert may discover Downtown Danville. Visitors headed to Virginia International Raceway may find a restaurant they love. Families visiting the Science Center may explore the River District. A casino guest may drive through surrounding neighborhoods and realize how much the area has changed.
Tourism creates something extraordinarily valuable for a growing community:
Exposure. And exposure can lead to much more than another weekend visit.

Across Virginia, more than 46.6 million overnight visitors traveled throughout the Commonwealth—a record. Visitor spending climbed to approximately $36.2 billion, representing a 3.1% increase over the previous year. Virginia Tourism Corporation President and CEO Rita McClenny described it as the Commonwealth's fourth consecutive year of record tourism performance. For Southern Virginia, however, being identified as the fastest-growing locality for visitor spending is particularly significant.
It suggests this region isn't simply participating in Virginia's tourism growth.
It is distinguishing itself within it.
Danville's Story Is Changing
For decades, discussions about Danville often centered on industries and employers the community had lost. Today, the conversation is increasingly about what is being built.
